The design of the exhaust silencer may vary depending on its application, with the most common types being the absorption silencer and the reflection silencer. In the absorption silencer, the silencer body is filled with a porous material, such as mineral wool, which the exhaust gas flows through. This material partially absorbs the sound energy and converts it into heat. The second variant is the reflection silencer. Here, the silencer is divided into multiple chambers and operates on the principle of interference, where sound waves pass through the chambers at different speeds, leading to the cancellation of sound pressure amplitudes.

It’s recommended to lubricate the entire length of the wire rope before inserting it into the casing to minimize friction. Additionally, it’s important to protect the Bowden cable from dust and dirt, as these can cause it to jam.

In our first Tech Thursday of the year, we’re taking a look at the Nilos gland. These glands are a popular method for sealing rolling bearings. Due to their minimal space requirements, Nilos glands are easy to integrate into existing systems. They develop their sealing effect by automatically grinding the sealing edge into the protected rolling bearing. After grinding in, a non-contact gap seal with an almost non-existent gap dimension is created, which prevents dirt from entering and grease from leaking out of the bearing. The various types of Nilos glands make them highly versatile. Among the most common designs are the AV type for sealing the outer bearing ring and the JV type for sealing the inner bearing ring. If a cover or sealing washer is already installed, the ZAV or ZJV designs are used. For rolling bearings exposed to particularly high levels of contamination, LSTO or LST-L type Nilos glands can be used. These labyrinth seals can also handle axial movements of up to 0.3 mm.
