A prominent example of a MAN engine type is the D2842, whose designation is easy to understand: the number "28" stands for the bore of the engine by simply adding 100 to the number of the engine type, which means a bore of 128 mm.
The number "4" stands for the stroke of the motor, which is calculated by multiplying the number of the motor type by 10 and adding 100, resulting in a stroke of 140.
The "2" means that the engine has 12 cylinders, whereby the number of cylinders plays a decisive role in identifying the engine. Engines with different numbers of cylinders offer different performance characteristics and fulfill different application requirements.
